My Story

From a young age, I was captivated by the mysteries of how living beings think and behave. Growing up in Montana, surrounded by the beauty of nature, I spent countless hours observing animals and journaling their behavior, curious about what guided their actions. This fascination with understanding led me on a path I could never have predicted.

At 26, my life changed profoundly when I lost my father to a brain aneurysm. Grappling with this loss, I found myself yearning to understand the complexities of the brain—the organ that held his memories, emotions, and the essence of who he was. Working in a record and bookstore at the time, I picked up a book on the wonders of the brain. What began as casual reading quickly became a deep passion.

Later, as a special education teacher, I found myself constantly asking questions: Why did some students grasp concepts so easily while others struggled? How did their brains process information differently? These questions drove me to learn more about how the brain shapes learning, behavior, and emotions.

My personal experiences continued to shape my journey. I married a man whose child had intellectual disabilities, and through them, I gained firsthand insight into the joys and trials faced by families navigating unique cognitive needs. Tragedy struck again when I lost an adult child to leukemia—a loss that deepened my compassion for families living with profound medical and emotional challenges. This further shaped my life when I later lost of my younger brother to a rare condition.

Each of these experiences—the curiosity sparked in my childhood, the loss of my father, child, and brother, the lessons learned as a teacher, and the love shared with my blended family—has shaped who I am today. They have driven me to pursue a career in pediatric neuropsychology, where I combine my passion for understanding the brain with my desire to support individuals and families facing their own unique journeys.

Today, I draw on these deeply personal and professional experiences to guide my work. Whether it’s helping an individual navigate the ups and downs of a rare genetic condition, supporting families through grief, or celebrating the successes of children with disabilities, my journey reminds me daily of the resilience and wonder of the human brain—and the incredible strength of the human spirit. Through it all, I hold on to hope. A drop of hope can make all the difference.
